Monday Night Technical Discussion

Synopsis

Temperatures across the state will drop overnight after a cold front passed through earlier this morning. The cool air will persist through Tuesday, but high pressure will begin to make its way into the state Wednesday. Warmer temperatures and clear skies will accompany this high pressure across much of the state through the weekend besides a chance for some rain showers late Thursday night into Friday morning.

Short Term (Monday night thru Wednesday night)

After a cold front crossed the state this morning, northwesterly winds will persist through Wednesday night providing a chance for lake effect snow and rain showers for extreme northwestern PA, especially Wednesday morning owing to a strong vort max aloft. Temperatures should drop into the 20's tonight for the majority of the state and Tuesday will follow with cloudy conditions owing to the northwesterly flow and positive vorticity. High pressure will move into the state Wednesday and thus downward motion and drier air will be the result, along with decreased cloud cover.

Long Term (Thursday into the weekend)

As high pressure continues to build in over the state clouds will begin to dissipate and southerly flow will bring high temperatures in the 50's for the majority of PA. As a system from the gulf approaches the area, southern and eastern portions of the state could see some rain showers Friday. The 18Z GFS is indicating the low pressure riding up the east coast. The NAO is currently negative; however, we are currently trending positive and will need to keep an eye on how far inland the rain could reach. As the low pressure system moves north up the coast, high pressure will build back in for the weekend and temperatures will continue to rise into the upper 50's and low 60's. We will also need to keep an eye out for Sunday and Monday, as the 12Z GFS is hinting at two separate low pressure systems passing to the north of PA and possibly bringing a few rain showers.
