Tuesday Night Discussion

Synopsis: A weak high pressure is currently settled into the region, however; this system will move out of the way of an approaching low pressure. This system will graze the commonwealth mainly impacting southern areas of Pennsylvania. A much colder and breezier pattern is in on it way for the weekend as the northern stream becomes fairly active over the next few days.

Short term: The current high pressure center clinging over the are will move out during the day tomorrow. A low pressure system will move in from the south with a shield of precipitation, spreading rain and snow across southern Pennsylvania. Generally, precip will start as a mix of rain and snow, with the transition to all snow occurring after sunset, Wednesday evening. Accumulation will range from 1 to 3 inches across southern PA with coating into central PA. Temperatures will decrease in the wake of this system.

Long term: The northern branch will get fairly active as a few clipper systems will work their way across the northern CONUS. A clipper will move to our north on Friday morning bringing light snow across northern PA and some snow showers across central PA. Subsequently, northeastern areas may see some lake enhanced snows on Friday night into Saturday. 0Z NAM offers a strange solution for this clipper, where it enhances precip just east of the Appalachians bringing a nice slug of moisture to southern areas of the state. This remains an outlier as this system should be fairly dry and only spread a few snow showers across our region.

Much colder conditions will persist into the weekend as an upper level trough digs south. Widespread temperatures in the teens should be expected throughout the weekend. A stiff northwest wind may also create off and on snow showers throughout the weekend.
