Technical Discussion 11/8/2011

Technical Discussion Tuesday afternoon

Synopsis: A ridge is currently in place keeping skies clear, and temperatures well above average. The ridge will depart from our area, and allow a cold front to advance in later tomorrow. After the front crosses the state, cooler temperatures will advance as the wind shifts to the northwest. The cooler air mass may only last a couple days before another ridge builds into our area at the end of the weekend.

Short-term:  A ridge is dominating much of the mid-Atlantic region which in return is delivering fair weather and warm temperatures to all places in Pennsylvania. Clear skies and calm winds tonight will allow temperatures to free fall into the 30's. Tomorrow, most areas will experience clearer skies in the morning. Both the NAM and GFS work the clouds into western PA in the morning, and continue eastward throughout the day. The RAW NAM keeps potential temperatures similar to today if not slightly higher. This could mean areas in which are cloud free mainly to the east could potentially find similar temperatures to those seen today. Most areas will be impacted by cloud development, and will be slightly cooler. Rain is predicted to weaken with this front as the low occludes. Still, some rain showers move through tomorrow night. With the cooler air behind the front, a snow shower is possible in higher elevations and westward locations.

Long-term: After the passing of the front, highs will be much cooler than highs currently being experienced. A wind shift northwesterly as shown by the SREFS will bring cooler air out of Canada. Models bring the 540 line as far south as North Carolina on Friday. This will be short lived since a ridge will slowly push its way in later in the weekend keeping fair conditions around for a while.
