Monday Evening Technical Discussion

Synopsis

As a cold passes through the area Tuesday afternoon into the evening, it will bring increasing clouds and a chance of precipitation. A shortwave moving the through the Ohio River Valley will approach the southern areas of PA and bring the chance for light across the central and southern areas. Behind this disturbance, a strong cold front from the northwest will move through the area on Friday bringing quite a chance of air masses. The air behind this front will be arctic and will bring brisk winds as well. This cold air will stick around for the weekend.

Short Term

Clear skies this evening have allowed temperatures fall off quite a bit after a gorgeous day with temperatures well above normal. Skies will remain clear through midday on Tuesday before a cold front progressing south will bring overcast skies. Once this front passes through, a disturbance will ride along this boundary with a chance of light snow for most the central and southern areas of the commonwealth.  This snow will mostly be light with no significant accumulations expected. Skies will clear behind this on Wednesday evening.

Long Term

Once this disturbance moves off to the northeast, a strong cold front will pass through containing very cold air. Friday will be near normal before this front gets into the area during the evening. Most of the models agree that the 850's temperatures will be near -20 C which corresponds to highs on Saturday in the higher elevations struggling to get out of the 20's. Southern areas as well as lower elevations will struggle to get into the 30's.  Strong, gusty northwest winds will make feel much colder and will help usher in that colder air. This cold air will stick around through the weekend a s a significant trough remains in place.
