Sunday Afternoon Technical Discussion

Synopsis:

A cold front will move through the commonwealth tonight into Monday morning. Expect very warm and humid conditions along with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms, potentially strong, before the front crosses. This same cold front will bring the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee to PA during the middle to the end of the work week. Obviously (no pun intended), there will be lots of rain this week due to these systems. We are also keeping an eye on Katia, a category 2 storm, as of the 2 PM EDT advisory, located about 500 miles NE of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Short-term:

Showers and thunderstorms were on-going across the northern and western parts of the state around 4:30 pm today. Additional isolated storms could fire along the I-99 corridor in the next few hours, but don't expect too much more activity today. Some of these storms are, and could become, strong to severe with damaging winds and hail. For further details, see severe thunderstorm watch 835 (in effect for the northeastern portions of PA until 11 PM) and associated mesoscale discussions - all issued by the Storm Prediction Center. These storms are being triggered in the warm (and humid) sector ahead of a cold front that will lead to more storms, some strong, tomorrow. The front will clear the western third by noon Monday; the central third by the crack of dawn Tuesday; and the rest of the state by noon, giving us a break before moisture associated with the remnants of T.S. Lee arrives Tuesday night.

Long-term:

Showers are possible Tuesday night but the bulk of the moisture associated with Lee will not arrive in PA until Wednesday afternoon, lingering for up to three (3) days. Katia is likely to move out to sea on Friday, but that could change as it gets closer: best bet would be to use Wednesday's runs to make plans regarding Lee's mositure and Katia's track.
