Thursday Afternoon Technical Discussion

Synopsis:

The cold front has passed through the region, bringing dramatically cooler temperatures along with it. State College experienced a drop off of 25 degrees over a 24 hour span. A strong high pressure system will be making its way through the state as the weekend draws closer.

Short-term:

Clearing has begun after the passing of the cold front, as precipitation will be tapering off in the coming hours. Cold air advection will be taking place for much of the state bringing with it much colder temperatures and possible frost warnings for the northern portion of the Commonwealth tonight. With the front departing and the high pressure coming in, blustery conditions are expected for Friday. As the weekend rolls around, high pressure will dominate. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly below average for on Saturday, while warming up a little more on Sunday as the ridge associated with the high pressure system passes through the region.

Long-term:

Temperatures are expected to climb back up into the 70s with the start of the next work week. Warm air advection will be taking place after the ridge moves through. Generally sunny skies should be prevalent for the first part of next week.
