Technical Discussion 9/6

Synopsis:

The remnants of Tropical Storm Lee will interact with a stalled front to bring the threat for heavy rain and the potential for significant flooding for much of the area through the end of the week.

Short Term (through Wed Eve)

The combination of a stalled front to our south and the remnants of Lee will continue to pull a deep plume of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean right into our region. This will provide the setup for periods of very heavy rain to occur from the overnight hours into the day on Wednesday. Most of the models are in agreement that the axis of the heaviest rain will set up right over Central Pennsylvania, with the GFS model showing as much as 10 inches falling through Thursday. With the anticipation of the heavy rainfall event, flood watches are in effect through Thursday evening as significant flooding is likely. The combination of northeasterly winds, continuous rainfall, and overcast skies will keep temperatures from changing too much from where they are right now.

Long Term (Thurs through Sat)

The low pressure system associated with the remnants of Lee will continue to influence our weather through the upcoming weekend as the upper-level low associated with the system continues to meander to our west. As a result, the threat for rain will continue but should be more scattered in nature as the upper-level low starts to weaken.  There will be a slight moderation in Temperatures as there will some breaks of sun at times with highs topping out near 70.
