Synopsis: Big changes are coming this week as two cold fronts will push through the Commonwealth Wednesday, with a strong high pressure coming in for the rest of the week. This will lead to the first taste of fall along with the possibility of seeing frost in northern parts of the state.
Short-term: As of 9:30 am, the first cold front is pushing through the state, out ahead of it, a southwesterly flow is in place, hence why the eastern portions of the state will see temperatures in the mid 80's while western side will see temperatures in the mid 70's. The bigger change comes tonight, as the more powerful cold front will be pushing through the state beginning at dawn. Both the GFS/NAM show this. Both of them are in agreement over the timing of the precipitation and of the front. Western PA, before 8am, Central PA around 10am, and Eastern PA around Noon. Right after the front pushes through, clearing should begin, as cold air advection should take place. In place of the front leaving and high pressure coming in, breezy conditions are expected. Thursday looks to be the coolest of the days as the upper level trough rolls through the region keeping temperatures cooler.
Long-term: Behind this strong cold front, a very strong high pressure system will come in with Thursday and Friday being "cold advection days", but for the weekend, high pressure will be in control. It will be over us for Saturday and in New England for Sunday. This should keep us semi below normal for Saturday, but expect a warm up for Sunday, as the associated ridge pushes through the state. Temperatures look to be below normal until Sunday, when we should be within average.
Keeping temperatures near midnight's shift.
