2-7-2011 Technical Discuission

Synopsis

A complex area of low pressure systems will move out of region by Tuesday morning. Any precipitation associated with the storm should gradually end during the morning hours on Tuesday. However, clouds will linger over the region throughout the day on Tuesday. A ridge of high pressure will build in from the Midwest on Wednesday, bringing the state sunnier skies. A cold front will sweep across the state Wednesday night and bring a quick shot of cold air for Thursday. A high pressure system behind the cold front will keep a vigorous storm system well to our south on Thursday. Expect calm but cold conditions until Friday. The temperatures should warm up nicely as a ridge building in over the Southeast during the weekend.

Short-term (Tuesday – Wednesday night)

Any lingering snow showers will gradually taper off on Tuesday as a strengthening low pressure system departs the Northeast. Upper-level moisture behind the system combining with a northwesterly flow will keep the skies cloudy for the rest of the day on Tuesday. However, the winds will shift to southwesterly as a high pressure ridge builds in from the Midwest on Wednesday. That will help to make a few breaks in the clouds. A cold front will sweep through the region Wednesday night. This cold front will not only provide us a quick shot of cold air for Thursday, but it will also act as a kicker that prevents a southern storm coming up the east coast. As result, expect generally calm but cool conditions on Thursday and Friday.

Mid-term (Thursday – Friday)

We are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. As described above, a high pressure system building in behind Wednesday night's cold front will keep the weather relatively calm on Thursday. A storm system passing through over the Southeast states should not be too much of a problem for the folks here in the Northeast. This storm system will probably be last winter storm we will see for a quiet some time. However, some models do indicate a possible clipper system passing over the region sometime early next week, but that is remain to be seem.

Long-term (The Weekend)

A rather strong high pressure system will develop over southeastern United States on Saturday as a more La Nina like weather pattern finally develops for the first time this winter. With the winds coming from the southwest, the temperatures will on the rise too. Some passing clouds are possible as a series of clipper systems scrapes over southeast Canada. Expect near normal or just above normal temperatures over the weekend so enjoy!
