Synopsis...
A weak disturbance will bring a mix of rain and snow to much of the western half of the state around midday Monday, which will transition to snow showers overnight tonight. Cold air will infiltrate the area following this storm and remain into Thursday. A possible moderation in temperatures may start Friday as we may finally break out of this deep trough that has been effecting much of the country all winter so far.
Short Term (Monday - Tuesday)...
Snow and rain showers will affect the western and central parts of the state this afternoon as surface temperatures are above freezing, but as temperatures drop overnight, mainly snow will fall. A general light accumulation up to a few inches is possible with this storm. Botht the WRF and GFS models show higher precipitation amounts for the western and central mountian areas of the state. A cold arctic air mass will move in behind the storm dropping temperatures throughout the day on tuesday. The high for the day will be mainly before noon for much of the state.
Long Term...
Cold air will remain over the state wednesday and thursday with the coldest air possible thursday as the 540 thickness line dips down into the central part of PA. A possible storm forming on thursday will remain well south of our area, but the latest forecast models show the southern-tracking shortwave losing its storm-building power. Other than that, no real big weather makers look to be in store for the eastern US into early next week. But it looks like the deep trough that has anchored into the eastern US for much of the winter so far will begin to erode as we may see more seasonable temperatures and possibly a warm-up early next week.
