TECHNICAL DISCUSSION

TECHNICAL DISCUSSION 02-21-11

.SYNOPSIS...

A low pressure system will be making its way in this evening bringing snow accumulations around five inches in the southern areas of Pennsylvania and possibly higher in the mountainous areas. A couple of inches are expected in the central states of Pennsylvania. The snow is expected to taper off in the earlier hours of Tuesday, when a high pressure system from the north will be making its way into the northern United States. Cold temperatures will be evident overnight and could find themselves in the mid-teens.

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY/...

After this evening a gradual clearing of skies will be evident. The GFS shows a higher pressure system to the north making its way into the northeast part of the US, which should allow for cooler temperatures tomorrow evening.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...

The models show the 540 line hovering over Pennsylvania for the remainder of the week, so cooler temperatures below 32 degrees are expected for a large amount of this week. The GFS shows a low pressure system making its way up the coast for Thursday and Friday of this week, so some small disturbances showing maximum positive vorticity could bring showers into parts of PA. Most places will struggle to get warmer than the 40s of this week and into Tuesday of next week.
