21Z Forecast Discussion - 10/14

Technical Discussion
Synopsis…

The low pressure system off the coast will continue to deepen over the next couple of days. Strong northwesterly winds are expected across the state through Sunday. High pressure will build in late Saturday leaving us with clear skies for at least the beginning of next week.

Short Term…

Rain will continue through the night for much of eastern PA as the major coastal low begins to wind up. Models all appear in good agreement keeping the steady rain east of the Centre Zone, leaving only sct shwrs for the west. Precip will gradually end as the low pulls off to the NE, with PIT clearing first. Latest runs hint at possible lake-effect rain shwrs forming near ERI, but nothing substantial. 18z WRF has shifted axis of heaviest rainfall from PHI to the NE Zone, where it shows wrap-around moisture sticking around into Friday night. Precip amounts are definitely lower this go-around, with nobody topping an inch…PA may dodge a bullet this time. But later shifts should watch for possible advisories later…Wind picks up on Friday as low bombs out creating interesting conditions across the NE as temperatures plummet aloft.

Long Term…

Skies clear in time for the weekend, but we are stuck in the early fall chill. Temps will top out in the 50s across most of the state both Sat and Sun…possibly topping 60 in PHI…but it will feel much cooler with the gusty NW winds. Otherwise…more of the same, with mostly sunny skies and clear, chilly nights. Winds should slowly die down by late Saturday. Calm pattern continues until a shortwave tries to bring in showers for Monday. No reason to think it will be tougher to forecast than GGW.
